What is Bowen Therapy?

A Brief History of The Bowen Technique

This hands-on remedial technique was first developed in Australia by Thomas Bowen.  It was in the 1980s that the technique first came to Britain, and it has continued to evolve ever since.  For a full history of the Bowen Technique please go to the Bowen Therapy Professional Association website where you will also find articles and testimonials from people who have experienced it for themselves.

The Bowen Technique is a very gentle form of hands-on therapy, suitable for children and adults from newborn babies to the elderly. It is important to note that Bowen is not a form of massage; there is no use of oils, needles or painful manipulation of the body. Bowen moves are made with the thumbs and fingers, in a rolling fashion, over muscle and upper layers of the skin. For those who have experienced other bodywork therapies the gentleness of Bowen moves can be a very pleasant surprise.

The human body naturally wants to be balanced and well. However, it is also very good at protecting us from pain or injury by holding on to imbalances and other compensatory mechanisms. For example, if you hurt the right shoulder the brain may instruct your body to ‘protect’ this area by over using other areas such as the back muscles. Unfortunately the body remembers these new patterns too well and they soon become ‘normal’ even though your shoulder has healed. Over time such mechanisms can build up, creating their own set of stresses, producing yet more symptoms.

Bowen therapy can help release this stress at a deep level – a process which has been compared to rebooting a computer or taking a mobile phone back to factory settings; our body’s memory is wiped clean of ‘corrupt files’.
